The long winter nights of the north country naturally encouraged the carving of the little people that have always lived on the farmstead. They were a helpful lot but loved to be mischievous so you had to treat them well - usually good food during the holiday period. To ignore them could mean a poor crop, a sick cow, just bad luck.
